This page collects all the key terms, deadlines, checklists, and official UK guidance links you need when going through redundancy.
ACAS: Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service — a free government-funded body that provides employment advice and runs Early Conciliation before tribunal claims.
PILON: Pay In Lieu Of Notice — your employer pays your notice period rather than asking you to work it. PILON is fully taxable.
Garden Leave: You serve your notice period at home, still employed and paid, but not allowed to work for a competitor or contact clients.
Settlement Agreement: A legally binding contract waiving employment claims in exchange for a financial payment. Independent legal advice is required.
TUPE: Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) — protects your employment terms when a business is sold or a contract is outsourced.
Collective Redundancy: When 20 or more employees are made redundant at one establishment within 90 days, triggering additional consultation obligations and an HR1 notification requirement.
Statutory Redundancy Pay (SRP): The minimum lump sum payment set by law — based on age, years of service, and weekly pay (capped at £643 for 2025/26).
ET1: The claim form submitted to an Employment Tribunal to start a formal claim.
EDT: Effective Date of Termination — the date your employment legally ended, from which key deadlines are calculated.
